What is sponsorship analytics?

A plain guide for sports clubs: what sponsorship analytics means, how to measure the value of a social media sponsorship, and how to turn it into proof your partners trust.

Sponsorship analytics is the practice of measuring what a sponsor actually receives from a partnership, rather than estimating it. For decades, clubs sold sponsorship on promises: a logo on the shirt, a board at the ground, a mention in the programme. What the sponsor got back was assumed, described in a slide at the end of the season, or simply never counted. Sponsorship analytics replaces that guesswork with numbers, measured continuously and attributed to each partner.

For most clubs today, the largest and fastest growing part of a sponsorship is social media. Every matchday post, highlight reel and behind-the-scenes clip carries sponsor branding to an audience that dwarfs the physical crowd. Social media sponsorship measurement is the part of sponsorship analytics that counts exactly what that content delivered: how many people saw it, how many engaged, and how that maps back to each individual sponsor.

How do you measure the value of a social media sponsorship?

Start with raw delivery. The two foundational metrics are impressions, the number of times the sponsor's content was shown, and reach, the number of unique people who saw it. Together they answer the first question a sponsor asks: how many people did we get in front of?

Then layer engagement on top. A thousand impressions on a post with a five percent engagement rate is worth more than ten thousand passive views, because engagement signals attention rather than a fleeting scroll past. Likes, comments, shares and saves all count, and the engagement rate normalises them so you can compare a small, highly involved audience against a large, quiet one fairly.

Finally, attribute everything to the right partner. A single post can carry a main sponsor, a shirt sponsor and a stadium partner at once. Sponsorship analytics assigns the performance of each post to the sponsors that appear in it, so every partner sees the value of the content that actually featured them, not a blurred club-wide total.

The metrics that matter

Impressions and reach

Impressions measure volume, reach measures unique audience. Both matter, and the ratio between them tells you how often the same people are seeing your content. On social media these are the closest equivalent to the classic broadcast metric of gross exposure.

Engagement rate

Engagement rate is the share of the audience that did something with a post. It is the single best proxy for whether content landed, and it is where clubs with smaller but passionate followings often outperform much larger accounts.

Trend over time

A single month tells a sponsor almost nothing. The value of sponsorship analytics comes from the trend: month over month, season over season, and around key moments like a cup run or a new signing. That trend is what makes a renewal conversation easy, because the numbers are already on the table.

Why estimates are not enough

Traditional sponsorship valuation leans on media-equivalent value: an estimate of what the exposure would have cost as paid advertising. It is a useful headline, but it is an estimate built on assumptions, and sponsors have learned to discount it. Real performance data, measured from the platforms themselves, does not need to be argued for. It simply is what happened.

The clubs that keep sponsors longest are the ones that stop selling on promises and start reporting on proof. When a sponsor can log in any day of the week and see exactly what their partnership delivered last week, the relationship changes. Renewals stop being a negotiation about perception and become a review of results.

How Partnership Insight fits in

Partnership Insight is sponsorship analytics built specifically for the social side of the partnership. It connects to your channels across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, X and Twitch, ingests the performance of every post automatically, and rolls the numbers up per sponsor. Each partner gets a live, read-only dashboard showing impressions, reach and engagement from the content they are part of, updated continuously rather than once a season. It does one thing properly, so your commercial team can stop building reports and your sponsors can stop asking for them.
